CSEntry isn't creating .dat result files

Post by jbthompson21 »

Help! The new survey i've been working is running well on my PC as well as on my Android tablet but when I run through tests it's not creating .dat files capturing the results of the survey. I tried with older surveys and they're creating .dat files just fine. Does anyone know what the issue might be with this. Everything else seems to be working fine, but actually getting data from the surveys is obviously important. Hopefully this is an easy fix. Thanks!!

Try rebooting the Android device. When new files are created on certain Android phones/tablets they don't show up when connecting the phone/tablet to the PC until after the phone/tablet is rebooted. Once the data has been created and have rebooted once you won't have to reboot each time you want to copy the data file. Just the first time when the data file is created.

If that doesn't fix it then try looking at the oath to the data file in the .pff file to make sure that the data file is being in the directory that you think it is.

I rebooted my Android tablet and tried it again. I've attached a screenshot that shows the files that are being created. Could it have something to do with the .pff run file that i'm using to run the application? I've been just creating that by opening up the survey and running a test like I usually would and saving it in the same folder. Could that be the problem because it looks like these files that are being created on my Android device have the same name as the name of the test run that I used to create the run .pff file on my PC. Thanks!

The above is in contrast with what I get running an older survey of mine on the same Android tablet, which makes me think it might be something with a setting or function of the applications which i'm now working on that are giving me the trouble. This is what is created by running the older survey on the tablet.

Yes it probably does have something to do with .pff file. when you run CSEntry on the PC (Windows) it asks you for the of the name and location of the data file. This is stored in the .pff file. When you run on Android it uses the same name and RELATIVE location of the data file. This means that if on Windows your data file is in the same directory as your .pff file on Windows then they will be in the same directory on Android. However if on Windows your data file is two directories up and in a folder called mydata then on Android it will also be two directories up and in a folder called mydata. So when you run on Windows note where you choose to save the data file. You can also see the contents of the .pff file by right clicking on it and choosing edit. Look for the InputData line in the .pff file to see the path to the data file.

In addition to the data file, CSEntry generates other related files to store field notes, operator statistics and other information. They have the same name as the data file but with an additional extension. For example if my data file is named foo.dat then CSEntry will also generate foo.dat.idx, foo.dat.not, foo.dat.sts and foo.dat.lst. See this document for a complete list (http://www.csprousers.org/downloads/wor ... nsions.pdf). By default Windows hides the file extensions (the .not, .sts...) making it difficult to tell these files apart. You should change that behavior to show all file extensions. See the following link for directions:

Taking a look at your image, I think that your data file is there.

See the file who has the red arrow at the attachment below.

Try to open it with a powerful text editor like Ex: "TextPad" and I think that you would be able to see your data in there.
The file is the one called: "Tanzania HH Survey TEST File", the one who doesn´t have extention.

Regards.
