CSPro vs Relational Database and Web Server

Post by surenbandi »

Hi,
We have a client running CSPro (release unknown at this point) and they use SPSS for their statistical analysis. Now they would like to upgrade their IT infrastructure so that they can use a centralized relational database to export data from CSPro and then create a web site to disseminate the data to general public. Would anyone be able to advise on the requirements to satisfy our client's needs please? Also, would anyone be able to answer the following questions please?

1) What is the latest CSPro release level available now?
2) Is there a RDBMS interface in place so that field surveyors can upload data directly to a centralized database over a network?
3) What would be the server requirements if we need to create a relational database to export data from CSPro?
4) Is CSPro ready now to let field surveyors enter data directly from field over a network?
5) What would be the other requirements (such as webserver/web sphere software and network) if we need to display data from CSPro on a website?

Any other suggestions please?

Thank You

1) 5.0.3 is the latest version.

2) No RDBMS support is currently built into CSPro. There is a tool, MyCSPro, that can export data from CSPro format to MySQL, but it does not work in the opposite direction at the moment, meaning that you cannot create CSPro files from data in your RDBMS. You can get the tool by emailing gregory.martin@census.gov.

If you are only interested in exporting data, then MyCSPro may be suitable for your purposes, but if your requirements are a bit more advanced, then you might have to create your own tools.

CSPro will eventually support RDBMS, but perhaps in a year or two.

There's a free solution who can do all you want: MMIC from Rand Corporation (https://mmicdata.rand.org/mmic/index.php).

Nevertheless, it's a web based solution. The questionnaires can't be used where there's no internet or network link.
More, there's no good documentation as Cspro.
There's no specific function for census/survey data processing as Cspro, so, according to me, it's less handy than Cspro.
But, it's compatible with some external languages as php, javascrip, html. If you've time and knowledge, you can design your own function using theses powerfull language.
