Numeric fields with notappl

Hi folks,
I have a numeric field (which could be the SSN for example) that I might accept the notappl value, if the person does not know it.
I´ve tried not checking the 'verify' option, I've tried defining this filed as a combobox in the field properties (by the way, this is very nice to define unknown values, for example, 9999), but the only thing that worked was to check the 'force out of range' option.
But this asks for a confirmation from the operator. I would like to accept a notappl by entering nothing in the field and the system not asking to confirm.
