CSPRO 6.3 on Windows Server 2012

Post by pleon »

Does anybody had success running CSPRO 6.3 on Windows Server 2012?

In our installation CSPRO raises errors on missing system files (bthpanel.cpl and some DLLs).

Is there some workaround?

I don't know of anyone running CSPro on Windows Server. CSPro is designed for Windows Desktop operating systems (XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8, 10) so we don't test on Windows Server. From reading online you may need to install the "Desktop Experience" features to get all the DLLs that you would get in a non-server version of Windows. See https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/lib ... s.11).aspx

Thanks for the reply josh.

So as I understand, when processing tens of millions records for a national census, it' s expected be done on a desktop/workstation, not on a server.

That' is not what I expected.

Then:

What are the recomendations regarding computing platform on that scenario?

Are there some recomendations on how to manage partitioning of the data, or how to parallelize processing?

CSPro is not a server based application. It was designed to run locally on a desktop with a local GUI not in a client/server or web based system that would require a server operating system.

For keyed data entry you run CSPro on each workstation using a different data file for each batch of questionnaires and combine the resulting data files at a later stage so you are never working with large datasets. For batch edit and tabulation with large datasets performance can definitely be slow. The faster your processor and hard disk, the faster they will run. We would recommend an SSD if possible. That said, we have been processing national censuses with millions of records on PCs since the mid-1980s with CSPro and it's predecessor (IMPS) so even on a fairly slow machine by today's standards it is very possible to do.

When developing and testing batch edit an tabulation programs we generally work with a small sample of the data and only run on the full dataset when the programs have been fully debugged. It is also possible to use a different data file for each region of the country and process each one on a separate computer and combine the results at the end. Look at "run in parts" in the help. It should be under "Run production tabulation".
